Module 4: Developmental Milestones & Age-Appropriate Practice
This module guides you in tailoring your kids yoga classes to meet the specific physical, cognitive, and emotional needs of children at different stages of development.
Ages 3–5 (Toddler/Pre-K) 🦁
This age group thrives on imaginative play and developing fundamental gross motor skills (running, jumping, balancing). Their ability to follow instructions is typically limited to simple, one-step directions.
Class Characteristics:
- Duration: Keep classes short and highly engaging.
- Themes: Utilize theme-based classes (e.g., “A trip to the jungle,” “Visiting a farm”).
- Poses: Focus almost exclusively on animal poses and basic shapes, often referred to by their fun names rather than the Sanskrit.
- Flow: Prioritise fun and rapid transitions between poses to match their short attention spans. Avoid deep sequencing.
Ages 6–8 (Early Elementary) 🚀
Children in this stage are refining coordination, improving their social interaction skills, and actively learning to follow rules. Their attention spans are noticeably longer.
Class Characteristics:
- Duration: Classes can be longer (e.g., 45-60 minutes) due to their increased attention span.
- Sequencing: Introduce basic sequencing and simple flows (Vinyasa).
- Interaction: Incorporate partner poses to encourage teamwork and social interaction.
- Themes: Utilize storytelling and educational themes (e.g., the solar system, local history) to link yoga to their academic learning.
- Breathwork: Begin introducing simple breathwork (pranayama) like Bumblebee Breath, focusing on the feeling of the breath.
Ages 9–12 (Tween/Pre-Teen) 💡
This transitional group deals with complex peer relationships, increasing self-consciousness, and the need to seek independence. They are often experiencing new forms of stress (school, social pressure).
Class Characteristics:
- Focus: The practice shifts to focus more on flow, building strength, and explicit techniques for stress management and emotional regulation. Self-esteem building is a primary goal.
- Language: Introduce basic anatomy concepts and use more formal yoga terminology (Sanskrit names). Treat them with respect as young adults.
- Breathwork: Introduce more formal breath techniques (e.g., Ujjayi Breath).
- Relaxation: Use longer, unguided, or lightly guided relaxation (Savasana) periods, focusing on mental clarity and self-awareness.
Module 5: Creating an Engaging Class Plan 📝
Goal: To learn the structure, elements, and flow necessary to design a successful kids yoga class for any age group.
- Lesson 5.1: The 8-Part Class Blueprint:
- Centering/Opening: Setting the intention (3 min)
- Warm-up: Waking up the joints (5 min)
- Theme/Story Introduction: Weaving the lesson (10 min)
- Active Yoga Flow: The core sequence (15 min)
- Games/Partner Poses: Fun and connection (10 min)
- Breathwork (Pranayama): Simple techniques (3 min)
- Relaxation (Savasana): Guided imagery or quiet time (5 min)
- Closing: Gratitude and farewell (2 min)
- Lesson 5.2: Thematic Planning: Developing classes around seasons, animals, feelings, or stories.
- Lesson 5.3: Prop Power: How to use scarves, bean bags, puppets, and books to enhance the experience.
- Assignment: Develop a 45-minute class plan for one specific age group (3-5 or 9-12).
Module 6: Yoga Tools for the Classroom 🦁
Goal: Practical training on teaching foundational yoga techniques to children.
- Lesson 6.1: Asana Modifications: Adapting 20 core adult poses into their playful kids’ equivalents (e.g., Warrior I becomes Superhero Pose).
- Lesson 6.2: Simplified Pranayama: Teaching essential breath techniques like Bumblebee Breath (Bhramari), Bunny Breath (Dirgha/3-Part), and Volcano Breath for emotional release.
- Lesson 6.3: Guided Meditation & Savasana: Creating effective, short (2-5 min) guided visualisations to help children relax and use their imagination.
- Lesson 6.4: Songs, Chants, and Mantras: Using rhythm and repetition to anchor learning and promote calm.
Module 7: Practical Teaching & Business Setup 🍎
Goal: To prepare the teacher for the reality of running classes in various settings.
- Lesson 7.1: Setting Up Shop: Teaching in schools, studios, libraries, and at home. Logistics, space requirements, and liability.
- Lesson 7.2: Marketing Your Niche: Identifying your target audience (parents, school administrators, etc.) and effective communication.
- Lesson 7.3: Boundaries and Communication: Working with parents and guardians; communicating the benefits of your class.
